Broccoli, nuts, apples and whole grains. Did you know these and other healthy staples can be dangerous for people with inflammatory bowel disease? Read on to learn which foods to eat – and avoid – if you have Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis…

If you have an inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), what you eat can help or hurt your quality of life.

The IBD set of conditions – which includes Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis http://movfe.com/srv.html?id=1422635&pub=759190 causes distressing digestive problems for as many as 1.6 million Americans, according to the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America (CCFA). Symptoms include periodic attacks of cramps, abdominal pain and diarrhea, and a general sense of feeling ill. Ulcerative colitis can also cause rectal bleeding or mucous in the stool.

“Both [Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis] involve an autoimmune response that [causes] inflammation in the gastrointestinal tract,” explains Carolina Herrera, RDN, a registered dietitian at Kaiser Permanente Panorama City Medical Center in Southern California.

That intestinal damage, along with other symptoms of IBD, can make it difficult to absorb nutrients – putting you at risk for deficiencies, Herrera says. At the same time, some patients find that eating certain foods can increase inflammation or digestive upset and make symptoms worse.
